Shipping from the USA to Italy

Italy is a longer ocean than Hamburg: East Coast cargo usually goes through the Strait of Gibraltar into the Ligurian ports, and a “cheap” transhipment in Spain or Malta can add a week. Air into Milan is the way to feed the northern industrial belt when the calendar is short.

Ocean when you have four weeks. Direct Ligurian calls from the East Coast are worth preferring over a transhipment, because an extra lift in Valencia or Gioia Tauro is how Italian machinery shipments get damaged and delayed.

Cost

Air into Malpensa for Lombardy and the North; Fiumicino when the delivery is Rome or the South. Fashion drops and line-down parts are the usual air cargo on this lane.

What it costs

LCL to Genoa exists but the CFS time is longer than North Europe, so the break-even versus a 20-foot box is often lower — sometimes around 12 m³ rather than 15. Fashion cartons that cannot be mixed with general cargo should not go LCL at all. We price both and say when LCL is a false saving.

Direct Ligurian call versus Med transhipment
Transhipment is cheaper on paper. The second terminal, and the feeder into Genoa or Naples, is where days and claims come from.
Genoa congestion
When Genoa is slow, La Spezia or Livorno can be the faster landed option even with a longer truck inland.
North versus South
Most U.S. industrial cargo is going to Lombardy, Veneto or Emilia-Romagna. Discharging in Naples to save ocean and then trucking to Milan is usually the wrong trade.
Peak and canal
West Coast origin cargo via Panama is a different product: longer, more seasonal. East Coast is the default for a reason.
Duty and VAT
Import VAT is 22% — higher than Germany or France — on customs value plus duty and freight. Duty is still the EU tariff.
IVA postings
Italian VAT accounting has its own habits. The importer’s setup, not the freight rate, decides whether 22% is cash at the border or on the return.

Entry points

Ocean

Genoa

Italy’s main container port for U.S. cargo and the usual discharge for the North. Watch congestion and have La Spezia as the overflow.

Ocean

La Spezia

Liguria alternative with strong rail towards the Po Valley. Often the cleaner call when Genoa is stacked.

Ocean

Livorno

Central Italy and Tuscan destinations without dragging a Genoa box south on the road.

Ocean

Naples / Gioia Tauro

South and transhipment hub respectively. Gioia Tauro is a relay, not a delivery address for Milan.

Air

Milan Malpensa (MXP)

The cargo airport for northern industry and fashion. Widest U.S. connectivity.

Air

Rome Fiumicino (FCO)

Centre and South; use it when the delivery is not Lombardy.

Customs and paperwork

Italy clears under the Union Customs Code through the Agenzia delle Dogane. The importer needs an EORI and a TARIC code. IVA at 22% makes the cash position of the Incoterm more important here than on a 19% German entry.

U.S. export side

  • Commercial invoice with values, Incoterm and both parties
  • Packing list with piece count, weights and dimensions
  • AES / EEI filing where value or commodity requires it
  • Bill of lading or air waybill instructions
  • SDS and DG declaration for hazardous cargo

Italy import side

  • EORI number for the EU importer
  • Import declaration with TARIC commodity codes
  • Proof of origin where a preference is claimed
  • IVA posting setup for the importer
  • Health, phytosanitary or dual-use licences where required
Import VAT (IVA)
22% standard rate on customs value plus duty and freight — higher than most of North Europe
Customs duty
EU Common External Tariff, same codes as Germany or France, different cash because of the VAT rate
Who pays
The importer of record. DDP into Italy without an IVA structure is how sellers get stuck at the dock
Deferment
Registered importers can often account for IVA on the return; first-time importers should not assume it

Italy-specific points worth knowing

  • Direct Ligurian services beat Med feeders for machinery. A second terminal is a second chance to damage a crate.
  • Most U.S. industrial cargo belongs in Genoa or La Spezia, not Naples. Match the port to Milan, Turin or Bologna — not to a cheaper ocean fare.
  • IVA at 22% changes DDP maths. We show it before you choose the Incoterm.
  • ISPM 15 wood packaging is enforced. Fashion and wine shipments still arrive on unmarked pallets; those get pulled.

Prohibited and restricted

Cannot be shipped

  • Counterfeit and pirated goods — actively targeted
  • Narcotics and certain chemicals
  • Prohibited weapons
  • Endangered species products under CITES
  • Certain foodstuffs from non-approved origins
  • Goods covered by an EU import ban

Needs a permit or licence

  • Alcohol and tobacco — excise
  • Medicines and medical devices
  • Plants, food and animal products — sanitary controls
  • Dual-use items — licence
  • Cultural goods
  • Radio equipment — conformity

Why GLP on this lane

We prefer the Ligurian call over a cheap feeder

Italy is where transhipment savings get spent on claims. Direct space from Newark is the default we quote first.

Port picked for the inland destination

Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno or Naples is a delivery decision, not a liner habit. Milan cargo does not belong in Campania.

IVA and EORI checked before booking

22% VAT on a DDP promise without an Italian fiscal setup is how cargo sits. We ask before the cut-off.

Questions about shipping to Italy

How long does shipping from the USA to Italy take?

About 16–22 days Newark to Genoa on a direct FCL, 18–24 days as a planning range. Transhipped services and LCL take longer. Air is 2–4 days into Malpensa.

Why is Italy slower than Germany by ocean?

The ship goes further — Gibraltar and the Ligurian Sea rather than the Channel and the Elbe. Direct services still beat a North Europe discharge plus a truck across the Alps.

How much VAT do I pay in Italy?

IVA is 22% on the customs value plus duty and freight, unless a reduced rate applies. Duty is the EU tariff. The Incoterm decides who funds that cash.

Genoa or Naples?

Genoa (or La Spezia) for the North, where most industrial and fashion cargo is going. Naples for the South. Mixing them to save a few dollars of ocean is usually more expensive inland.

Can you handle machinery and out-of-gauge to Italy?

Yes. We measure, crate and book the equipment that fits — including when Genoa’s terminals have limits that push a piece to another port.

Is LCL a good idea to Italy?

For small, robust cargo, yes. For machinery, fashion that cannot be mixed, or anything near a full 20-foot, FCL is usually kinder. We price both.
