Shipping from the USA to the United Kingdom

The North Atlantic is the most heavily served lane out of the U.S. East Coast, which is good news on both modes: weekly direct sailings from Newark and Savannah, and daily widebody capacity out of JFK. Post-Brexit the paperwork is heavier than it was — that, rather than the transport, is where UK shipments now stall.

Ocean

Typical cargo
Machinery, industrial parts, retail consolidations, household goods

Choose ocean when you have three weeks or more and the volume justifies it. Direct services to Felixstowe and Southampton avoid European transhipment, which matters because a transhipped box adds days and a second handling risk.

Air

Transit
2–4 days
Cost
4–6× ocean per kg
Typical cargo
Spares, samples, electronics, pharma, tender-critical parts

Air makes sense for dense, urgent or high-value cargo. Heathrow and East Midlands both clear quickly, and entries can be pre-lodged so the cargo moves the day it lands rather than the day after.

What it costs

This is one of the few lanes where LCL is genuinely competitive, because consolidation volumes to Felixstowe are high and departures are weekly. Under about 8 m³ LCL almost always wins. Above roughly 15 m³ a 20' container is usually cheaper and always faster, since it skips deconsolidation at the destination depot. Between the two we price both and show you the difference in landed cost and in days.

Container size and utilisation
A 20' that ships half-full costs the same as one that ships full. Consolidating two part-shipments into one box is the single biggest saving on this lane.
Season and capacity
Rates firm up from August through October ahead of UK retail peak, and blank sailings around the New Year tighten space on direct services.
Felixstowe congestion
When the port runs hot, waiting time and haulage rates inland both rise. Southampton or Liverpool can be cheaper overall even with a longer sailing.
UK haulage from the port
Inland delivery is priced per mile and per vehicle type, and it is a real cost — a delivery to Scotland is materially more than one to the Midlands.
Duty and VAT treatment
Whether you are the importer of record, and whether you are VAT-registered in the UK, changes your cash position more than the freight rate does.
Customs complexity
Post-Brexit entries need a GB EORI and correct commodity codes; goods with a preferential origin claim need documentation to support it.

Entry points

Ocean

Felixstowe

The UK's largest container port and the default for U.S. East Coast services. Best for cargo heading to London, the South East and the Midlands.

Ocean

Southampton

Strong direct coverage and quicker turnarounds when Felixstowe is congested. Convenient for the South and South West.

Ocean

Liverpool

The natural entry for the North West, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and often cheaper on inland haulage than shipping via the South.

Ocean

London Gateway

Deep-water terminal close to the M25, favoured for retail volumes going straight into distribution centres.

Air

London Heathrow (LHR)

The widest freighter and belly capacity from the U.S., with round-the-clock clearance handling.

Air

East Midlands (EMA)

Express and e-commerce gateway; often faster for Midlands and Northern delivery than routing through Heathrow.

Customs and paperwork

Since Brexit, shipments from the USA to the UK clear under UK national rules rather than EU rules, and every consignment needs a full import declaration regardless of value.

U.S. export side

  • Commercial invoice with values, Incoterm and both parties
  • Packing list with piece count, weights and dimensions
  • AES / EEI filing where value or commodity requires it
  • Bill of lading or air waybill instructions
  • MSDS and DG declaration for hazardous cargo

UK import side

  • GB EORI number for the importer
  • UK import declaration with commodity codes
  • Proof of origin where a preference is claimed
  • Import licences for controlled goods (firearms, some chemicals, plants)
  • Health or phytosanitary certificates for food, plants and animal products
Import VAT
20% standard rate on customs value plus duty and freight
Customs duty
0–12% typically, by commodity code — machinery is often 0%, textiles and footwear are not
Who pays
The importer of record, as set by the Incoterm — DDP puts it on the seller
Deferment
Postponed VAT accounting lets VAT-registered importers account for VAT on the return rather than at the border

UK-specific points worth knowing

  • A GB EORI number is mandatory for the importer. Applications are quick, but a shipment arriving before one is issued will sit.
  • Commodity codes moved to the UK Global Tariff after Brexit — codes copied from an old EU entry are a common source of holds.
  • Wooden packaging and pallets must meet ISPM 15 standards, and this is enforced. Non-compliant pallets are refused at the border.
  • Personal effects can qualify for relief on transfer of residence, but only with the correct application filed before arrival.

Prohibited and restricted

Cannot be shipped

  • Counterfeit and pirated goods
  • Offensive weapons, flick knives and self-defence sprays
  • Certain knives and firearms without authority
  • Meat, dairy and animal products from non-approved origins
  • Endangered species products under CITES
  • Indecent or obscene material

Needs a permit or licence

  • Firearms, ammunition and their parts — licence required
  • Alcohol and tobacco — excise duty and licensing apply
  • Medicines and controlled drugs — MHRA authorisation
  • Plants, seeds and soil — phytosanitary certificate
  • Food and animal products — health certification
  • Radio transmitters and encryption hardware

Why GLP on this lane

Weekly direct space from Newark

Our home port is Newark, four minutes from our warehouse, and Felixstowe services run weekly — so consolidations do not wait for a sailing.

Post-Brexit entries handled properly

EORI checks, UK Global Tariff classification and preference claims are dealt with before the vessel arrives, not after a hold notice.

One coordinator across both sides

The person who books your container also chases the UK clearance and the final delivery, so nothing is handed to a third party mid-file.

Questions about shipping to UK

How long does shipping from the USA to the UK take?

Port to port, 12–16 days from Newark to Felixstowe and 14–18 from Savannah to Southampton on direct services; LCL adds roughly a week for consolidation and deconsolidation. Air is 2–4 days. Door to door, add two to four days for pickup, filing and UK delivery.

How much is import duty and VAT in the UK?

Import VAT is 20% of the customs value plus duty and freight. Duty itself depends on the commodity code and commonly runs 0–12% — much machinery enters at 0%, while textiles, footwear and some food carry real rates. We calculate both before you commit so the landed cost is not a surprise.

Do I need a customs broker to import into the UK?

You need a GB EORI and a correct declaration; you do not legally need a broker, but a first-time importer filing their own entry is where most delays start. We file the U.S. export side and coordinate the UK entry through our partner, so one party is accountable.

Can I ship a car from the USA to the UK?

Yes, by RoRo or in a container. The original U.S. title must be presented for export, and on arrival the vehicle needs an import declaration, duty and VAT payment, then IVA or MOT approval before registration. Vehicles over 30 years old are treated differently on both duty and approval.

What is the cheapest way to ship to the UK?

Ocean LCL for small volumes, ocean FCL once you exceed roughly 15 m³, in both cases through the gateway closest to your cargo. The most common avoidable cost is not the freight rate — it is trucking cargo across the U.S. to a port that was never the right one.

Do I need to worry about Brexit paperwork?

Yes, and it is the main change of the last few years: every consignment now needs a full UK import declaration and a GB EORI, and commodity codes follow the UK Global Tariff rather than the EU one. We treat that as part of the booking rather than something to solve on arrival.

Can you handle personal effects and household goods?

Yes, both LCL consolidation and full containers. The document that matters is a detailed inventory with values — UK customs assess relief claims on it, and a vague list is the usual reason a household shipment is examined.
