Shipping from the USA to Turkey

Turkey is a Mediterranean discharge, not a North Europe one: East Coast cargo runs Gibraltar and usually tranships once before Ambarlı, Mersin or Izmir. Air into Istanbul is dense and frequent. The paperwork is Turkish, not EU — GTIP codes, importer registration, and on some U.S. goods additional duties that do not appear on an EU TARIC printout.

Ocean or air to Turkey

Ocean

Transit
20–28 days
Cost
Low per unit; watch additional duties
Typical cargo
Machinery, industrial parts, chemicals, textiles inputs, project cargo

Ocean when you have four weeks. Ambarlı for Istanbul and the Marmara industrial belt; Mersin for the South and for transit cargo continuing east; Izmir for the Aegean. Direct-looking products that actually feeder via Piraeus or Malta need that extra week written on the quote.

Air

Transit
2–4 days
Cost
4–7× ocean per kg
Typical cargo
Spares, samples, electronics, pharma, urgent project parts

Air into Istanbul Airport when a plant or a site date will not wait for Ambarlı. Capacity is good; lithium, DG and dual-use still need acceptance before we promise a flight.

What it costs

LCL to Istanbul exists via Med hubs, so the CFS clock is longer than Hamburg. Under about 8 m³ LCL can still win. Machinery, anything crated for a single consignee, and cargo that will transit Turkey under customs bond should be FCL so the seals and the transit document match.

Ambarlı versus Mersin versus Izmir
The inland destination decides the port. Istanbul cargo via Mersin is a long truck; Adana cargo via Ambarlı is the same mistake in reverse.
Transhipment in the Med
Most U.S. services relay. We name the hub and the extra days rather than advertising a door-to-door number copied from a direct North Europe loop.
Additional duties and surveillance
Some U.S.-origin goods face additional customs duty or surveillance measures on top of the MFN rate. Classification has to be done properly or the landed cost is fiction.
KKDF and other financial charges
Certain import methods historically attracted extra resource-utilisation charges. How you pay, and whether the goods are investment machinery, changes the cash. We confirm the current treatment with the destination agent rather than quoting a blog rate.
VAT
KDV is generally 20% on the dutiable value. Some machinery can be relieved; that is a Turkish tax question with documents, not a verbal “it is investment”.
Used vehicles
Used-car imports from the U.S. are effectively closed for private buyers. We will not take a booking that cannot legally clear. Machinery and boats are a different conversation.

Most ocean services tranship in the Mediterranean, so the named hub and Ambarlı/Mersin congestion move this range. Direct-looking schedules still need a feeder day counted.

Entry points

Ocean

Ambarlı (Istanbul)

The main container cluster for Istanbul and Marmara industry. Default U.S. discharge for northern Turkey.

Ocean

Mersin

Eastern Mediterranean gateway for southern Turkey and for transit cargo moving onward to the Caucasus and beyond under customs transit.

Ocean

Izmir (Alsancak / nearby terminals)

Aegean industry and agricultural regions. Less congested than Ambarlı for the right inland destinations.

Ocean

Gemlik / Tekirdağ

Marmara alternatives for specific industrial pockets; quoted when the consignee is there, not as a surprise discharge.

Air

Istanbul Airport (IST)

The cargo airport that replaced Atatürk for most U.S. freighter and belly traffic.

Air

Izmir and Ankara

Onward domestic air or truck from Istanbul is usually simpler than forcing a thin international frequency into a secondary airport.

Customs and paperwork

Turkey is outside the EU customs union for practical U.S. freight purposes: you need a Turkish importer, GTIP classification, and often a certificate of origin. ATR documents apply to EU origin, not to U.S. origin cargo pretending to be European.

U.S. export side

  • Commercial invoice with values, Incoterm and both parties
  • Packing list with piece count, weights and dimensions
  • AES / EEI filing where value or commodity requires it
  • Bill of lading or air waybill instructions
  • Certificate of origin — commonly requested on Turkish commercial entries

Turkey import side

  • Turkish importer tax number and customs registration
  • Import declaration with GTIP codes
  • Control certificates / TAREKS / TSE where the product is regulated
  • Health or phytosanitary certificates for food and agricultural goods
  • Investment-incentive or exemption documents if VAT or duty relief is claimed
Import VAT (KDV)
Generally 20% on the dutiable value; relief exists for some investment machinery with the right papers
Customs duty
GTIP-specific MFN rates, plus possible additional duty or surveillance on particular U.S. goods
Who pays
The Turkish importer of record. DDP from a U.S. seller who is not established in Turkey is a setup project, not a checkbox
Other charges
Some payment methods and commodity classes attract extra financial charges. We confirm the current rule with the destination broker rather than freezing an old rate in the quote

Turkey-specific points worth knowing

  • U.S. origin does not get ATR treatment. That document is for EU–Turkey. Sending an ATR for American cargo wastes a week.
  • Used passenger cars from the U.S. are not a product we can clear for a private importer. Ask before you collect the title.
  • TSE, TAREKS and product-safety controls apply to many electronics, consumer goods and machinery. The test report belongs with the booking, not after Ambarlı storage starts.
  • If the cargo is only transiting Turkey to Georgia, Azerbaijan or Central Asia, say so — bonded transit is a different customs path than a Turkish import.

Prohibited and restricted

Cannot be shipped

  • Narcotics and many controlled substances
  • Counterfeit and pirated goods
  • Certain waste and scrap without permits
  • Goods under current Turkish import prohibitions
  • Endangered species products under CITES without permits
  • Used passenger vehicles for typical private import

Needs a permit or licence

  • Electronics and telecoms — TAREKS / conformity
  • Machinery — CE/TSE documentation as applicable
  • Food, plants and animal products — veterinary / phytosanitary
  • Chemicals and DG — permits and SDS
  • Medicines and medical devices — ministry approval
  • Dual-use items — export and import licences

Why GLP on this lane

Port matched to Istanbul, the South or the Aegean

Ambarlı, Mersin and Izmir are not interchangeable. We quote the discharge that matches the delivery, including when cargo is only transiting.

Turkish duties, not an EU printout

GTIP, additional measures and importer registration are checked before sailing. Copying a German TARIC rate onto a Turkish file is how quotes lie.

Honest used-vehicle advice

If a unit cannot clear, we say so before it reaches the terminal. Machinery, boats and project cargo are the work we actually book on this lane.

Questions about shipping to Turkey

How long does shipping from the USA to Turkey take?

About 18–26 days Newark to Ambarlı on ocean FCL, 22–30 to Mersin, longer from Houston or the West Coast. Most services tranship, so count a feeder. Air is 2–4 days into Istanbul.

How much duty and VAT will I pay in Turkey?

KDV is generally 20%. Customs duty depends on the GTIP code and may include additional measures on some U.S. goods. We classify and confirm with the destination agent rather than advertising a single percentage.

Which Turkish port should I use?

Ambarlı for Istanbul and Marmara, Mersin for the South and eastbound transit, Izmir for the Aegean. The inland truck usually costs more than the ocean difference between the wrong port and the right one.

Can I ship a used car from the USA to Turkey?

In almost all private-import cases, no. Turkish rules effectively block typical used passenger cars. Do not collect the vehicle until we have confirmed it is an admissible class (for example certain machinery or other equipment).

Is Turkey the same as shipping to the EU?

No. Different customs code, different importer registration, no ATR for U.S. origin, and sometimes additional duties. Treat it as its own lane.

Can cargo transit Turkey without importing?

Yes, under customs transit to a further destination, with the right document chain. That has to be declared up front — you cannot convert a failed import into transit after the fact without pain.
